Victory
Over Violence (VOV)
- A Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in a Changing
World.
The
Victory Over Violence Event examines the root causes of violence
in its myriad forms, and attempts, through dialogue, to identify
the ways in which individuals can take action to end violence in
their lives and throughout the world.
The
Gandhian principle of defeating violence with love begins with a
personal commitment to self-transformation as a basis for social
change. Transformation of our individual inner-characters
establishes the means by which we can each project a desire for
peaceful social change through courageous action.
The
presentations and panel discussion will reflect on the
philosophy and work of Mahatma Gandhi and examine the positive
role that faith based practices have in facilitating both
individual and societal transformations, and promoting
courageous action against all forms of violence.

L. (Scotty) McLennan, Jr.
has been the Dean for Religious
Life at Stanford University since January, 2001.
Also a lawyer, Rev. McLennan practiced church-sponsored poverty
law in the Dorchester area of Boston from 1975 until 1984, while helping
to develop non-adversarial dispute resolution techniques through a faith
based initiative. Rev.
McLennan’s primary research is on the interface of faith based
practices, ethics, and vocational endeavors.
Ian
McIlraith is the Vice-General Director of the lay
Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai
International (SGI)–USA and a Stanford alumnus. In discussing his Buddhist practice, Mr. McIlraith, a
graduate of Stanford writes, “Starting with prayer aimed at care and
respect for others, followed by efforts to help others embrace and
deepen their faith… [s]uch widespread effort by a steadily increasing
number of individuals will not only create a significant quality of life
improvement in society but will also foster a movement for peace filled
with the most beautiful and precious relations among its members.”
Clarissa
Douglass, a leader within the SGI-USA,
and a graduate of Stanford, works to promote world peace and individual
happiness through her activities, study and prayer within the Nichiren
