Stanford Windsurfing Club

Windsurfing Classes Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring?

All you really need is yourself, a check for $100, signed paperwork, and shoes. However, you may want to bring a bathing suit, a towel, sunscreen, and a bottle of water.

Are there any prerequisites?

Yes, you need to take a swim test at roble pool or provide evidence that you have passed it in the past. Alternatively, a copy of a lifeguarding or scuba diving certification will also suffice.

What skills will I learn in the class?

You will learn basic proficiency in windsurfing including uphauling, self-rescue techniques, sail trim, tacking, jibing, footsteering, equipment rigging, sailing terminology, sailing etiquette, beachstarts, waterstarts (if conditions permit) ... and much more !!!!!

What equipment do I need for the class?

We provide all the windsurfing equipment and lifejackets. You need to wear foot protection. A pair of old tennis shoes work well as do watersport booties. Sandals (ie TEVAs) work OK. Although not necessary, if you have or can borrow a wetsuit it wouldn't hurt for the first few weeks until the lake warms up.

Where is the class taught?

Classes are generally held on Felt Lake, a large pond located off of alpine road on the other side of I-280.

Do I need a car?

No. All classes will meet behind Roble Gym (north side) and carpool over to Felt Lake.

What type of windsurfing equipment will we be using?

We have floaty HiFly longboards (330FX) and a mixture of sails the likes of which you have probably never seen.

How do I register for the class?

Class signups can be made via the windsurfing club website starting towards the end of winter quarter.

Do I get Stanford course credits for taking the class?

No. We would like to offer the class for credit in the future, but for now the class is just to have fun and learn how to windsurf.

How much does it cost?

Only $100 for 20 hours of class!!! Heck, if you tried to rent a windsurfing rig for 20 hours at Shoreline Lake in Mountain View it would cost over $300 and you wouldn't get instruction!!! Please make out your checks to "Stanford Windsurfing Club".

Are there any refunds?

We have a strict NO REFUND policy, just like the rest of the activities offered through the Athletics Dept. Once you've paid, no refunds are given.
