At Stanford

Charmin (pronounced SHAR-min) Smith was listed as the only shooting guard among last year's five incoming freshmen...But in a pinch, it was said that she could play the point...And that is exactly what happened last year in the NCAA playoffs...There were moments where Charmin came off the bench and played very well at the point, substituting for an injured Jamila Wideman...Considered a very fine defensive player, she chose Stanford over UCLA, Virginia, Duke, and Purdue..."Charmin is a very hard worker," said VanDerveer. "She is a very dependable, unselfish team player. We need for her to improve her strength and stamina a bit. But her versatility is one of her strengths. She can play both the `1' and the `2'"..."Charmin's very quick, very athletic," said Associate Coach Amy Tucker...."She reminds some people of Bobbie Kelsey. She's very enthusiastic and has lots of energy. There's no doubt she has added a lot to the team."

The 1993-94 Season

Charmin appeared in 24 games as a freshman, averaging 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds...But she was not necessarily asked to be a scorer, so those figures could be deceiving...Her role was to back-up both guard positions...Her role heightened in the post-season after starting point-guard Jamila Wideman sprained an ankle in the last regular season game against Washington...Charmin first played seven minutes against the Huskies, scoring three points and pulling down four rebounds...Then against Wisconsin-Green Bay (an 81-56 NCAA win), Charmin was credited with two points, one rebound, one block, and one steal, shooting one-for-one from the floor, in 13 minutes of solid play...Her career highs in points (8), rebounds (6), and assists (3) all came in one game versus Long Beach State...At the post-season banquet, Charmin was named co-winner of the "Coaches Award" (along with Wideman).

In High School

While a senior at Ladue High School in St. Louis, Charmin averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals...Prior to the season, she had been named a Street & Smith's honorable mention All-American...After the season, she was named All-Metro (a combined Illinois and Missouri team), and First Team All-State...Charmin then played in the Show-Me Games and a Hall of Fame All-Star game...But her biggest claim to fame may have been playing for the North Team in the U.S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio in the summer of '93...As a junior in high school, Charmin averaged 23 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals...She once scored 99 points in a 3-game span in one week...In the summer of '91, she was an AAU All-American for the St. Louis Blaze...She was a First Team All-Suburban South Conference player all four years...She was Second Team All-State as a junior, and was the Conference Freshman Player of the Year her frosh campaign...As a sophomore at Ladue, she averaged 16 points and 6.6 rebounds...Owned a 3.8 GPA at Ladue...Was President of her Student Body as a senior...Made the National Honor Society.
