At Stanford
Bobbie Kelsey has been a great addition to the Stanford... The
5-11 guard/forward is listed as a junior, but she is entering her fourth year
on The Farm...She is listed as the team's lone junior...She redshirted the
entire 1991-92 season due to a knee injury that did not allow her to
play...(More on that below)..."Bobbie is a real mature player," said
VanDerveer. "Her attitude is her strength. She is very coachable, and adds a
lot to the team, a lot of enthusiasm. Her position is very competitive, so a
lot depends upon how much she improved over the past summer. An excellent
three-point shooter, I expect Bobbie to play more of the "2" position this
year. She should be a good rebounder from that spot."...Perhaps the most
impressive aspect to Bobbie's career came in the first year--when she was voted
by her teammates the "Most Inspirational Player" in '91-'92, a year that she
didn't even play. That will give you an idea of how well-liked and how
well-respected she is."...She has scored 368 points and pulled down 200
rebounds in her career...In 1992-93, she was named Stanford's "Most Improved
Player."
The 1993-94 Season
Bobbie started six games last year, playing in all 31...She
started the first four games, averaging 7.5 points and 3.1 rebounds for the
entire season...Her three-point field goal percentage of .445 was third best in
the Pac-10...If you discount the team's first six games, and count the last 25
games only, Bobbie shot a remarkable .553 from three-point range
(26-of-47)...She shot .447 from the field overall, and .765 from the
line...Scored a career-high 23 points in the year's very first game at Texas
Tech...She led Stanford in scoring twice, also scoring a team-high 17 in the
victory at Utah.
The 1992-93 Season
After nearly two years of not playing a game due to injury,
Bobbie finally got a chance for the real taste of action...She played all 32 of
Stanford's games, starting one (Texas at home)...She averaged 4.3 points and
3.3 rebounds, both 7th best on the team...She was the first forward off the
bench...She averaged 14.2 minutes per game, but that number was rising
significantly towards season's end when her 3-point shooting ability came to
the front...She made 20 3-pointers, 3rd most on the team...But 13 of those came
in the season's last 10 games...One the season, she shot .365 from the field
overall, .385 from 3-point range...In those last 10 games, she shot .419 from
3-point land.
The 1991-92 Season
Redshirted during this national championship year... Head
coach Tara VanDerveer got her cake (won the title), and was able to eat it too
(by redshirting Kelsey)...Bobbie practiced (on a limited basis) with the team
the entire season, but she wore a brace on her injured left knee, and never
played...Her teammates were so impressed by Bobbie's attitude that they voted
her the Team's Most Inspirational Player.
In High School
There was much excitement the day that Bobbie Kelsey committed
to Stanford...And no wonder...Known at Southwest DeKalb High School as "Special
K", Bobbie was named a preseason Second Team All-American by Street &
Smith's prior to both her junior and senior seasons...As a senior, she was
named a USA Today Top 25 performer... With the good news, however, there then
came some bad news for Bobbie...She injured her left knee early in her senior
year, injuring the dreaded anterior cruciate ligament...It required surgery
after she played just six games her senior season...As a junior, Bobbie
averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 steals...She shot 51
percent from the field and 85 percent from the line leading her team to the
state semifinals...As a sophomore, she averaged 21 points and 8 rebounds on the
junior varsity...Bobbie chose Stanford over Clemson, Virginia, Auburn, and
Georgia...Following her junior year, Bobbie was named Co-MVP of her team...She
was named Dick Vitale's Magazine number three "Prep All-American from the
South"...She was named an All-State performer and honored by the Atlanta Tip
Off Club the very same night in April, 1990 that Tara VanDerveer was named the
Naismith National Coach of the Year and that Jennifer Azzi was named the
Naismith National Player of the Year by the same organization...She received
the school's Chemistry Award following her junior year.
