At Stanford

Tara (pronounced TAIR-a) Harrington is listed as a forward at 6-0, but has the capability of playing the shooting guard position... "One of Tara's strengths is her three-point shot," said Cardinal Associate Coach Amy Tucker. "She's also a strong, physical player, a good ballhandler and a good passer"..."This year Tara will play more of a `2' or `3' position," said VanDerveer. "Tara has good work habits, and I like players with good work habits. She's in great condition, is strong, and now has experience. Her key will be in making good decisions with the ball"...Tara chose Stanford over Auburn and Vanderbilt...There's little doubt, she possesses the most classic of jump shots on the team...Her three-point attempts can bring rain. This past summer, Tara had a chance to play in the U.S. Olympic Festival in St. Louis (she was originally an alternate, but injuries to others on the West Squad would have allowed her to play)...Instead she chose the much nobler cause of fighting fires -- doing so in almost every western state, including Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, and Colorado.

The 1993-94 Season

Tara averaged 5.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in a reserve role as a freshman...She played in all 31 games, starting one (at Utah)... No doubt, Tara's numbers would have been slightly higher had she not been asked to play somewhat out-of-position...A natural shooting guard or small forward, Tara played the power forward ("4") position last year...She scored career-highs of 16 points twice on the road -- at Washington State and at Arizona...Shot .723 from the free throw line...Had 8 rebounds in the Dartmouth game...Her best of 6 assists came in the victory versus California at home.

In High School

In her senior year at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Tara averaged 28 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 assists, while shooting 83 percent from the free throw line--all while leading her team to a third place finish in the State of Oregon post season tournament...She was named a Kodak High School All-American...She was also named a USA Today Second Team All-American, a USA Today Top 25 member, a Street & Smith's Second Team All-American, the Oregon State Player of the Year, the Southern Oregon Conference Player of the Year (for her last three years), the Gatorade Regional (Pacific) High School Player of the Year, and the Gatorade State of Oregon Player of the Year (for her junior year as well as senior year)...As a junior, she averaged 19.7 points, 9.5 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 5.5 steals for a team that finished 22-3...That season she shot 51 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line...For the last three straight years, she was named First Team All-State...Prior to her junior year, she was named a Street & Smith's preseason honorable mention All-American...She has been a BCI Girls Prep International Tournament All-American...She was First Team All-Southern Oregon Conference all four years...At the Blue Star Camp, she was named a Top Underclassman in the summer of '91, and the camp MVP in the summer of '92...As a sophomore, she averaged 15.4 points and 8.5 rebounds for a team that also finished 22-3...A member of the Honor Roll at Mazama all four years...A member of the National Honor Society.
