"Kristin is an extremely talented athlete who is playing two
sports (volleyball and basketball) here at Stanford," said VanDerveer. "She has
been very dedicated to both sports. She is a great leaper, a very skilled
player who gets the job done, a fine rebounder. When she joins our team after
the volleyball season is over, we hope it won't be too long before she gets
into basketball shape. But we'll certainly be looking forward to that day when
she does join us."...Before joining the Cardinal in the fall, Kristin competed
in the Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia -- where she and her team
earned a silver medal in volleyball...She is considered an Olympic prospect in
both sports.
In High School
Considered the nation's top recruit in volleyball, Kristin was
also considered one of the nation's top recruits in basketball...She is on a
basketball scholarship at Stanford...Kristin led St. Joseph's Academy in St.
Louis to four consecutive state titles in basketball and four consecutive state
titles in volleyball...In basketball, Kristin was named a First Team
All-American as a senior, both by Parade Magazine and by Street &

the Kodak All-American game played last April in Jackson, TN, she scored 23
points...At St. Joseph's, she averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds as a junior,
while shooting 67 percent from the field... Her team won 72 consecutive games,
before losing once in her senior season...Has been able to dunk a basketball
since the beginning of her junior year...In volleyball, Kristin's exploits were
as legendary at St. Joseph's, if not more, than they were in basketball...St.
Joseph's had a still-active 94-match winning streak and a No. 2-national
ranking at season's end...She also shattered the national high school career
kills record with 1,819 in four years and tied the national record with 36
kills in one match...(The records she broke or tied were those of her new
Stanford volleyball teammate, Marnie Triefenbach)...Volleyball magazine labeled
her "the recruit of the decade" as a senior...She was also named the National

Louis, where she lit the flame in the Opening Ceremonies...She was one of only
five high school players selected for that event...She had 99 kills in four
matches, including 32 in the bronze-medal winning match...Days earlier she
tallied 37 kills in a round-robin match...In the summer of 1993, she was a
starter on the U.S. National "B" Team that toured Europe...Named the Dial Award
winner, signifying her as the nation's high school student-athlete on the
female side (joining another Stanford freshman, golfer Tiger Woods, on the male
side)...Kristin was the subject of a 10-minute piece on ESPN's Scholastic
Sports America show...She was also the subject of a one-page profile in Sports
