At Stanford

At 6-7, Chandra Benton becomes the tallest player in Stanford history...The previous two tallest players, at 6-5, were Jill Yanke (1985-89) and current senior Anita Kaplan..."Every one of the incoming freshmen is adding a different dimension to our team," said VanDerveer. "Chandra is adding a dimension we've never had before -- a 6-7 dimension. You can't teach size. She's a good scorer and has a good outlet pass. We'll need her to realize just how physical and how much faster a game we play on the college level. One thing is for sure. She will alter our opponents' shots when she is on the floor."

In High School

Labelled the No. 1 recruit in the country by Dick Vitale's Magazine, Chandra was listed as a preseason 2nd Team High School All-American by Street & Smith's Magazine prior to her senior year at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego...Following her senior year, she was named a Second Team All-American by Parade Magazine, and a Third Team All-American by USA Today...She joined three future teammates (in Kristin Folkl, Heather Owen, and Olympia Scott) at the Kodak All-America game that was played in Jackson, TN last April...Her GPA is listed at 3.80...She was the captain of both her high school volleyball and basketball teams... She is a three-time AAU All-American in basketball...In AAU's, her scoring averages jumped from 10.6 to 15.2 to 19.3 ppg for three consecutive summers...As a junior, she averaged 18.7 ppg, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.0 blocked shots, all while shooting 64 percent from the field. "She is one of those people who believes her size is not a bother," said Royce McDaniel, her high school basketball coach, and who coached Lakeridge to a state title when Chandra was just a freshman. "In fact, she enjoys being tall. She's a real good worker, and is increasing her shooting range. She could shoot `3's if we let her. She's not just a `back-to-the-basket' player."... Chandra was First Team All-Three Rivers League her last three years...She was Third Team All-State as a freshman and sophomore...She was Second Team All-State as a junior, and First Team All-State as a senior...Entering her senior year, she was a USA Today Top 10 Player to Watch...In volleyball, Chandra was honorable mention all-league as a sophomore, then second team all-league as a junior and senior...On the school's Honor Roll all four years...Earned a Fine Arts Award...Named an Oregon Scholar-Athlete and a Merit Scholar-Athlete...National Honor Society.
