Gas and Oil

Martin Storey writes: WAISers may find the following website stimulating: http://www.peakoil.net/

Randy Black comments: I didn’t have to look far to discover the nature of the “stimulating” site provided by Martin Storey (http://www.peakoil.net/).  With links to sources such as Al-Jazeerah, the peak oil site is full of controversial anti-American, anti-Israel verbiage, the-end-of-the-world-is-near hysteria and slanted, certainly not objective or scholarly opinions. For instance, a columnist for a Venezuelan e-publication linked to peak oil's home page disparages the US Secretary of State as “Candy” Rice (sic). The writer states that among other actions, the US has Iran in its bombsites. “…. (regarding) Iran the USA's bomb-happy war criminals are itching to do.” Another misguided writer from Scotland claims that Russia’s oil reserves are in decline, when clearly the opposite is true.
Bottom line: Mr. Storey is right on the mark. The site is stimulating, if not over the top when it comes to supporting (many) unfounded facts and hysteria.

One of peak oil.net’s writers cannot even get the date of the first US oil well right. He’s off by three years when he writes, “…Ever since the first oil was drilled in the USA in 1862.” (It was 1859 if you’re referring to a commercial well but is 1814, if you’re referring to the first well that produced oil for use by consumers.) For that matter, there is evidence that Native Americans were using raw petroleum (oil) as a medicine in North America in the 1400s.
