Re: CHILE: Allende and cobribed by the Nazis???

A good WAISer is willing to admit his mistakes, and George Sassoon admits he was wrong in saying that the tune of "Amazing Grace" came from the Isle of Mull.  On another more important matter, he writes: This morning's papers review a  book by the historian Victor Farias, who looked up a dissertation by the Chilean Salvador Allende in which he expresses extreme right-wing views. Farias' book, Salvador Allende: Anti-Semitism and Euthanasia is to be published in the U.S. and Spain later this month.  He claims that Allende and others each received 300,000 Reichsmarks from Ribbentrop in about 1939.  RH: Well!  We await the book with interest.

From the UK George Sassoon called attention to a  book by the historian Victor Farias, who looked up a > dissertation by the Chilean Salvador Allende in which he expresses extreme right-wing views. Farias' book, Salvador Allende: Anti-Semitism and Euthanasia is to be published in the U.S. and Spain later this month.  He claims that Allende and others each received 300,000 Reichsmarks from Ribbentrop in about 1939.

Carlos Lopez from Chile comments:The Chilean Socialist Party did receive help from the Germans before Hitler attacked the Soviet Union. The unholy alliance was made possible by the "massacre" in the Social Security Building. A bunch of Chilean Nazis, led by one Gonzales Von Marees, occupied the Central Building of the University of Chile. President Arturo Alessandri ordered them attacked by the police. When they surrendered, they were marched to the Social Security Building where a second group was still resisting. The police charged behind them and killed them all. They were Nazis, the mortal enemies of the socialists, but they became "our martyred brothers" and a symbol against the government, It is safe to say, that the incident, united the opposition, and the government lost the election to a Popular Front candidate. There is great picture of Allende
marching in a Socialist militia unit.

RH: Arturo Alessandri Palma (1868–1950) was a Chilean political figure and reformer. He served as the president of Chile between 1920 and 1924, again in 1925, and finally >from 1932 until 1938. I assume that the events Carlos refers to.took place during his last presidency.
