Southerners and Lincoln Memorial
A posting from Carmen Negrìn described the argument between Spanish conservatives and socialists over the burial site of Francisco Franco, I asked: What do Southerners think of the Lincoln Memorial? Gene Franklin replies: Your question reminded me of a long-forgotten incident. An Asheville, NC high school friend and I were having a reunion of sorts in Washington, D. C. in 1946 when we both were in the US Navy. As we went along the Mall, I suggested a visit to the Lincoln Memorial, but he refused, saying he would NEVER set foot in that place. I realized then that I had been given a non-traditional Southern up-bringing by my school-teacher parents.
