Soccer

Soccer is the world sport. A TV program from Kabul sports stadium, where until recently executions took place, showed crowds watching the world soccer cup games on a large TV screen. Small boys said they hoped to become great soccer players. To judge by another TV program on young Americans playing soccer, the US will catch up with Afghanistan.

My interest in soccer is sociological. When South Korea beat Italy, the Koreans went happily wild, the Italians were downcast. Perugia fired its star player, Ahn Jung Hwan, because he scored the goal for South Korea which knocked Italy out of the tournament. So the concept of a national team is blurred. What about North Korea? Did South Korea's success promote the cause of reunification? The North Korean government probably tried to stifle the matter.

Hank Greely, new to the mysteries of soccer, wondered why there is only one referee. The players are constantly falling over each other, and I have not the faintest idea when a foul has been committed. The referees have been the target of harsh recriminations. There are demands for a reform in the selection of referees. My solution: Have several referees, not just one. Make Hank Greely president of FIFA.
