Miles Seeley joins in the defense of competitive sports:
I think most of the people who have played competitive sports appreciate the role sports have played in their lives-- I know I do. Despite some aches and pains from old injuries, I am glad I participated and treasure the atmosphere and friendships sport provided me. I hear similar sentiments from many others, while the harshest criticisms seem to come from those who did not play. No offense, but maybe you simply had to have been there.

My defense: I admit that the only sport at which I was any good was long-distance running. I simply wore the competition out. There was, alas, no spirit of camaraderie. There are sports and sports. Bull-fighting, which was popular among the youths of Spain, was a very competitive sport, but the bull and the torero did not shake hands and have a beer afterwards.
