Soccer: Mexico and "state"
Following the US victory over Mexico, I thought I heard Cameron Sawyer saying "To hell with soccer", Paul Simon saying "I don't watch that dull game, soccer", and Raśl Escalante of Mexico demanding revenge. At least on the last point I was wrong. Raśl acted with genteel calm, and simply asked:"Aren't Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England all separate states joined in the United Kingdom? All four have World Cup teams and FIFA registry. A ticklish question: if a foreign national becomes a subject of the Queen, could that person play for either of the four teams? All four have played in the World Cup finals". Another headache: what is a state? The US is United States, and the Mexican states are free and sovereign (libre y soberano). So California and the ex-Federal District of Mexico (now a state) should be able to field teams. There are problems. California has a flag (the Bear Flag), but does it have an anthem? If so, I have never heard it. If Mexico City fielded a team, would Mexicans root for the chilangos? A apologize for not answering Raśl's question.
