World Soccer Cup: Brazil beats (?) Turkey
Carlos Lopez is the pontifex maximus of soccer on the Peninsula. He thus has papal infallibility. I was therefore startled when I received this message from him: "You don-t need the University of Ulster computer study! Look at yesterday-s game. It is obvious that Brazil is going to get every break from the referees. There were at least two mistaken calls, one the penalty, the other the red card, that made a Mexican commentator say:" Joe Havelange, the Godfather of World Soccer, was so upset by the poor playing by Brazil that he phoned the referee and asked for help." Obviously not a true story, but the referee's behavior makes you wonder. It is the same old story: Brazil has to be in the final to guarantee the TV revenues!" Carlos refers us to this Reuters story:
"Brazil media admit help from referee" http://www.reuters.co.uk/news_article.jhtml?type=wcsoccernews&StoryID=1047856&fromEmail=trueIt begins: "Brazil media admit help from referee: Brazil's media have acknowledged a poor call by South Korean referee Kim Young-joo handed them victory in their opening World Cup match on Monday, echoing comments made by Turkey players and media. "Oriental Hospitality," Rio de Janeiro's O Globo newspaper said. "Brazil opens with 2-1 victory over Turkey with help from South Korean referee Kim Young-joo, who awarded Luizao a penalty for a foul outside the area."
Wait a minute! All this is getting unWAIS. The reference to "oriental hospital" is politically incorrect culturalism, a variant of racism. I feel sorry for the referees. Soccer action is terribly fast. On the field it is very difficult to see what is going on, especially if you are a vertically impaired referee. To suggest that this is a dastardly scheme to make money for Coca-Cola sponsored TV is part of a campaign against Wall Street. Probably Turkey will now withdraw its bid to enter the EU and start sponsoring terrorists.
