SCOTLAND: sheep and other problems
In discussing George Sassoon's account of Scotland, I mentioned that Ullapool is a little port of some 800 inhabitants on the rugged northwest coast of Scotland. I have never been there, but Mary Huyck reports "it is lovely, with warm breezes and almost tropical vegetation. It has a great botanic garden, if I remember correctly. Scotland forever! " Could George comment on this surprising description? I have another question. The human memory is a strange thing. When I read George's account of black-faced sheep, I started humming a song I had not heard since my distant childhood:"Ba, ba black sheep, have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full". Amazing, the Scottish sheep; they can talk. WAISerdom is full of erudition. Could someone complete the poem, giving the author and the date? Are black-faced sheep the same as black sheep? I don't think I ever saw a totally black sheep. In view of George's disgust, perhaps I should say "Bah! Bah! black sheep..."
