Clan Hatreds
A hornet's nest is blissful in comparison with clan hatreds. I am amazed at the responses to the postings about the Campbells. Here is one:
"You're right about all the other Scots hating the Campbells. When we were in Scotland four years ago, we had lunch at a pub in the village where there is a big Campbell castle (I've forgotten the name). After eating, I stopped at the bar to ask the publican directions. He and an elderly local were talking. I joined the discussion, and almost immediately the customer began railing against the Campbells. His clan and theirs had been feuding for three centuries, and he was still furious about some domestic squabble in the 18th century wherein a young clanswoman of his had married a Campbell, had a baby, and her father-in-law had murdered the child. As the man recounted the tale, he became as angry as if the event had happened the year before. I guess that Highlanders can be pretty good at bearing grudges, at least where Campbells are concerned."
My comment: Such hatreds are common in many parts of the world. Often the original cause of these hatreds is forgotten. Unfortunately Lethe is a myth. Unless we can cure such hatreds, peace will be impossible.Ronald Hilton - 09/18/99
