SCOTLAND: Eigg;Die Ziet

The Scottish island of Eigg caused a tempest in the WAIScup. The starting gun came from Die Zeit, which I described as generally trustworthy.

Christopher Jones. who until recently lived in Germany, writes: "It is indeed a trustworthy weekly newspaper, not only because of my collaboration but from good solid Hanseatic traditions. Founded by Gerd Brucerius after the war, its most prominent publishers have been GrŠfin Marion Dšnhoff and former SPD chancellor Helmut Schmidt. ( a conservative socialist).

I find the editors of Die Zeit open minded if a little trendy-lefty. But maybe even that's changing with the times: they saw the magic in the following article and had the guts to give it the entire back page".
Then follows Christopher's long article in German about Leni Riefenstahl, whom Christopher interviewed at length, I just saw a TV documentary about her. There was a striking contrast between the attractive young woman who made films glorifying Hitler and the rather bewildered old lady of today, Die Zeit--time marches on. Last year I met at Stanford the new editor of Die Zeit. He has a tie with Harvard University and speaks excellent English.
