"Vladimir demanded marriage to a Byzantine princess born in the purple as a
precondition for being christianized under the Church of Constantinople, which
brought his domain under the Byzantine sphere of influence. Another part of the
agreement was the dispatch of 5000 elite Russian warriors at the disposal of the
Byzantine Emperor Basil II, which he used to crush a major rebellion by the
Byzantine armies. In effect, Byzantium conceded an unprecedented marriage of a
princess born in the purple to a hitherto heathen and barbarian prince -- which
enhanced his domestic and international prestige enormously -- in exchange for
immediate and conrete, as well as long term benefits".
