LAW: Re; Class Action Lawsuits
Dwight Peterson has sent another piece about lawyers, from which I extract this: "You have totally misconstrued my remarks about used car salesmen, Rob. Our family has been in the automobile business since 1919 and a Dealer of Oldsmobile, Buick,Volvo, Jaguar, MG, Triumph, Isuzu, Dihatsu and other lines until retirement in 1990. My comments about used car salesmen were meant to be just what I said they were, that there are honest, well meaning, helpful ones out there just las there are probably lawyers of the same ilk. It was a play on words that, obviously, passed you by or didn't play well and for that I am sorry".RH:
This brings up a bigger problem: the stock jokes about certain professions, which offend the target as much as Polish jokes offend Polish Americans. We single out "used car salesmen", or should I say "pre-owned car salesman"? Did Jessica Mitford start the badmouthing of morticians with The American Way of Death? In France for some reason grocers are the butt of contempt ("Ne fa”tes pas de l'ˇpicerie!) In Spain it was traditionally the executioner (el verdugo). In Buddhist countries, it was people involved in killing animals, including those dealing in leather. I just listened to a conservative diatribe against professors, so we may join used car salesmen. What about Germany, Russia, etc?Ronald Hilton - 08.17.03
