LAW: Re; Class Action Lawsuits
Jody Brennan writes: "I was planning to ignore the first hit Mr. Gaudet gave me when referring to my journalism as poorly researched and flat out wrong, and now he has decided that I am a closed-minded person since I do not agree with his view. I am drawn out: First, the article which I wrote for Forbes was 100% given to me right out of the horse's mouth by Peter Angelos, the centi-millionaire contingency attorney in Baltimore. I remember he wanted to pay for lunch, and (due to ethics) I absolutely could not let him do so---we were not allowed to accept gifts from subjects of our news stories. Also, Forbes will not publish any story unless it is fact-checked from an independent source and pays dearly to keep its news bullet-proof. I have no idea how Gaudet can defend Angelos when he does not know him nor has ever spoken to him. About accusing me of not being open to new opinions: If that were true I d be quite a boring idiot without much to learn in this world. As I am only in my 30s, I guess I would not have a reason to live out my life according to Mr. Gaudet's view. Targeted point: Who are the real givers to humanity? Most would argue they are people who risk their life and careers to help others. Would one put a plaintiffs attorney that sues a OB/GYN doctor trying their best to save a life in that category? Mr Gaudet apparently has not learned to sympathize with the OB/GYN doctor who takes incomparable risks delivering a baby to a drug-addicted and HIV-positive 12-year-old girl that shows up in the emergency room in the middle of the night with no previous medical care. This happens ALL THE TIME. Few doctors/hospitals run as fast as they can from that desperate girl because of the indescribable fear of being ruined from the likes of people like Mr. Gaudet or Mr. Angelos. Most risk their entire life and career and deliver the baby. And they pay (everyone does) the exorbitant fees to keep the system alive and protected from the over-fed lawyers. (Of course there are extreme exceptions.) I see now they want to get fat people to sue the maker of Oreo cookies. as if there are no other food choices out there. Mr. Gaudet must see that extreme in his profession. There must be caps on what these insatiable lawyers reap. Let them earn an honest living as do most of the rest of us".Ronald Hilton - 08.17.03
