JAPAN: Hiroshima and the Bomb

General Robert Gard, an academic who is the least saber-rattling of generals, comments:

"I carefully researched the decision to drop the atom bomb on Japan for the first chapter of my dissertation Arms Control Policy Formulation and Negotiation, 1945-47. I concluded that it was not only the correct decision under the circumstances of the time, but also that Truman would have been impeached if we failed to do so and had to launch the invasion of Japan. Hindsight is always brilliant, and frequently misleading."
