IRAN: The end of the Mullah state?

Christopher Jones says: "John Heelan seems to see something positive about mullahs which I do not. I am no friend of the Pahlevis, who are partly responsible for the current mess (along with Jimmy Carter), but compared with Ayatollah Khamenei, the Shah was a truly enlightened leader. I cannot believe that anybody would risk his life in a fundamentalist dictatorship because he listened to the Shah's son on TV. It is almost perverse"

RH: I remember at the time, leftists in Iran and the US assumed that the fall of the Shah would bring in a leftist, even communist regime. The triumph of the mullahs was a shock to them. Politics is full of unexpected consequences. The Spanish Republicans of 1931 never dreamed that their acts would lead to civil war and the Franco dictatorship.
