IRAN: The end of the Mullah state?
RH: I remember at the time, leftists in Iran and the US assumed that the fall of the Shah would bring in a leftist, even
communist regime. The triumph of the mullahs was a shock to them. Politics is full of unexpected consequences. The
Spanish Republicans of 1931 never dreamed that their acts would lead to civil war and the Franco dictatorship.
