WORLD HISTORY
Ed Simmen has called my attention to this item, which is closely related to the WAIS proposal to establish a depository of history textbooks from around the world to combat the distortions which lead to hatreds and wars. I am sending the NEH a copy of this posting to encourage consideration of this proposal, which would provide an invaluable resource for the proposed website:The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has issued a "Request for Proposals" (RFP) for the construction of a "world history website." The website will need to be designed to support those who are called upon to teach world history classes in schools and colleges. Traditional NEH grantee institutions (colleges, non-profits, institutions of higher learning etc...) are invited to submit proposals by October 15, 2000. The RFP may be viewed at http://www.neh.gov/pdf/guidelines/edd_worldhistory.html for more information, contact Bruce Robinson at (202) 606-8213.
My comment: The danger is that the proposal will be used for partisan ends. The NEH has been buffeted by such attempts from both parties. It is doubtful that either party has the expertise necessary to ensure that world history is not viewed from a narrow American viewpoint. WAIS would be glad to give NEH whatever help it can. If the network accepts submissions from different countries, the problem will be partly solved, although some of the messages I receive are, albeit different, as narrow as those they denounce.
