Halloween: Pumpkin Tradition at Logelheim, Alsace
George Sassoon confirms the story about Logelheim. The information comes from his friend Henry Callot, a native of the region:
There is a long tradition of hollowing out pumpkins (also giant beets) and putting candles inside at Logelheim, Alsace. It also appears that this sector of Alsace has a 200 year record as the principal export center, by far,of migrants to America. He mentions a small town in Texas where the elders still speak Alsacian. He does not mention any tradition of attacking outdoor privies, but there is a passing reference to damage.
My comment: Would Texan WAISers please tell us which small town speaks Alsacian? The German-speakers of Texas are well-known, but perhaps they are really speaking the Alsacian dialect of German. Is attacking outdoor privies the best way to commemorate the dead?Ronald Hilton - 11/12/99
