Le Rugby

Michael Bassett ventures into the history of French rugby:
Its support is strongest in the areas where the British had their last toeholds in France in earlier times, and where today English is spoken more fluently. Toulouse and the area around there is the part that goes maddest whenever the French are playing le rugby. Interestingly, it is still the counter culture area in France, just as it always has been. The area where Jospin scored most strongly against Chirac in the French presidential election in 1995. I'm not sure that this adds much to your theory.
