France/US relations
I mentioned the French complaint that the Bush administration was spreading lies about France through the Washington Times/Insight, with special reference to the passport case, which is the subject of this message from Christopher Jones in France: "The attached article is one of the sorriest things I've seen come out of the US in a long time. If this sanctimonious editor at the Washington Times cannot name the persons who received these French passports and where they are in the country, I must conclude that the entire affair is a hoax. I strongly urge the French government to sue this scurrilous rag for libel. But to think that the US government is sponsoring a worldwide defamation against France goes beyond belief. There were other reports lost in the mayhem however that might confirm this. A few weeks ago it was reported that the French Quai d'Orsay had reported back to Saddam's regime on Franco/American discussions. Now, in a surprise move, Bush has met with Roland Koch, the right wing CDU chief of Hessen. It will get really interesting if the President's flirtation with the German opposition were matched with an invitation to Jean Marie Le Pen to visit the White House -- I don't think the more US friendly Lionel Jospin will make it through the door -- he was the socialist candidate".
