EUROPE: Education and culture

In discussions about Europe, Charlemagne has often been invoked, but he is essentially German and French, quite inadequate fot the new Europe, which includes even eastern Europe. So the name of John Amos Comenius has been recalled. Comenius (1592-1670) was born in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic. A major humanistic figure, he became Bishop of the Moravian Brethren, a pietistic Protestant sect. During the religious wars, he was forced to become a wandering scholar,, primarily in Germany, Poland, Sweden England and Holland. In his honor, pan-European cultural and educational networks have been formed. See
http://www.socrates-uk.net/comenius/comenius3.htm. Comenius 3 Networks involve at least one organization from each of at least six different European countries, and partnerships are designed to bring on board new organizations. Activities supported through Networks include the organization of seminars and conferences, the dissemination of project results, comparative studies and the provision of advice and guidance to potential co-ordinators. Networks are usually be funded for one or two years, or three years in exceptional cases. The level of funding varies from one Network to another, however in the past the average grant allocated has been in the region of €50,000 to €150,000 per Network per year.
