UNITED KINGDOM: Oxford University and Cambridge

Ron Bracewell recalls the good old times at Cambridge:

"Your description of Oxford in the thirties sounds rather advanced to me. In the late forties, when I was at Cambridge, there were women studying but they were not members of the University. Instead of being obliged to wear gowns at night, or in the library, they were forbidden to wear gowns. Women were admitted to membership of the University and to degrees while I was there, about the same time as Britain forsook India."

My comment: In the Civil War, Cambridge supported Cromwell's Roundheads, while the King held court in Oxford. How did women's rights compare in the two systems? What did that great trumpeter of freedom, Milton, say about women's lib? I plead ignorance. Can anyone enlighten me?
