Islamic fanaticism and Egypt

Guity Nashat, an expert on the Middle East at the University of Illinois, Chicago criticizes the article in El Pais. mentioned by John Wonder: "I teach modern Middle Eastern history, and here are some of the factual mistakes in the comments or translations of the article:

  1. Hasan al-Banna's organization, the Society of Muslim Brothers, was formed to fight what he believed was unfair occupation of Egypt by the British, who came to Egypt in 1882 to put down a rebellion, and then stayed on. Anyone interested in learning more about the movement, should read Richard Mitchell P. The Society of Muslim Brothers (Oxford U Press, 1969). For why the movement was radicalized, I would recommend Kepel, Gilles. Muslim Extremism in Egypt. (U of California Press, 1993).
  2. Nasser died of a heart attack in Oct. 1970. He is not the founder of Arab nationalism, and he created an extremely repressive regime. To learn more about him, I would recommend Waterbury, John. The Egypt of Nasser and Sadat. (Princeton University Press, 1983).
