CUBA under Castro
Alberto Gutierrez comments on the postings about Cuba: "While no Soviet nuclear weapon was launched from Cuba during the missiles crisis, a SAM was activated by Fidel Castro himself, according to Carlos Franqui, one of his close associates in those days. That missile shot down a U-2 spy plane flying over Cuba, and the pilot was killed on the ground. Apparently Castro wanted to derail some kind of understanding that already was taking place between Washington and Moscow, and thus provoke a confrontation.I know of a relationship between Castro and Saddam Hussein through Dr Alvarez Cambra, a Cuban physician who years ago took care of the Iraqi dictator and his son. There was a transfer of some sensitive biological material from Cuba to Iraq, according to expert Cuban exiles.
Castro boasted that Cuba today does not permit gambling ,but is no secret that Guillermo García Frias, a member of the Cuban Politburo, and other officials have many facilities for cockfights. In those places gambling is a normal activity and sometimes foreign supporters of Castro are invited. Gambling is also widespread among those "hijos de papá "who favor the cards, billiards, etc forbidden to the people. My only regret is the way you consider that Havana became a den of vice after the US intervention in our affairs.Of course there was plenty of gambling and prostitution, but particularly this last activity was limited to certain areas of the city. Not everybody earned a living playing poker or selling lottery tickets. The line between the immense percentage of decent women and those available in other places was well defined. Today the city under the Castro tyranny is in complete decay, morally, physically and financially. The jineteras, the modern prostitutes making a desperate living from foreign tourists, swarm El Malecón and La Rampa as never before, amid the police who participate with the pimps in the "business". Meanwhile, in the hotels visitors, mainly from Europe, get ready for cheap sexual kicks".
