COSTA RICA
Tim Brown asks us not to confuse two celebrations of the Virgin in Costa Rica. The Virgin is the symbol of motherhood in many countries:"My suspicion is that what Jaqui witnessed was the romeria [pilgrimage on foot] in homage to La Virgen de Los Angeles [Costa Rica's patroness] of August 2. August 15th is, indeed also a major holiday for Costa Ricans, as it is their Mother's Day. On the 15th, Ticos take gifts, especially of flowers, to their mothers and traditionally have a family day with her at her home, although more recently these fiestas familiares may also take place in restaurants or be picnics on the exuberantly green slopes of the mountains Jaqui saw."
