The Trial of Pinochet
Several WAISers, including Tom Marks, have written about the risk to public concord in a trial of Pinochet. Carlos López writes:
"Today's El Mercurio carries an interview with Pinochet's son. Young Pinochet believes that Lagos will find a political solution to the crisis. It is widely believed that the Pinochet trial is aggravating the Chilean antagonism between the Pinochet supporters, estimated at 40% of the population, and his enemies. It is a disgrace that the Appeals Court of Santiago leaked its decision to remove Pinochet's immunity. Pinochet is not the only former president who holds senatorial rank, so does Eduardo Frei."Ronald Hilton - 5/25/00
