The Presidential Election

David Crow comments on the analysis of the Chilean election by Carlos López. In a multiparty system, the swing middle party or parties can play a decisive and even destructive role, as has happened in Italy. David Crow says:
The reading from some of my Chilean friends is that the Christian Democrats sold the "Concertación" down the river. Both Socialists and Communists supported the Christian Democrats during the Aylwin and Frei administrations, but the Christian Democrats split their vote once the alliance moved the slightest bit to the left. So much for party discipline and loyalty.
