CHILE: Dictatorships
The charges against the Chilean military dictatorship of Pinochet involve murders and torturing. The lead, front-page article in The Chronicle of Higher Education (8/17/01) is entitled "Memory and Justice. A scholar in Miami charges a scholar in Chile with participating in his torture there, and many academics feel the reverberations". This is one of a number of stories from different countries about foreigners in the United States recognizing their old torturers and denouncing them. There were several such cases after World War II, resulting in the expulsion of the torturers from this country.Ronald Hilton - 10/12/01
