Chile, again
Dwight Peterson, who was a banker in Chile, writes: "A very interesting posting from Carlos Lopez. Could he expand a bit on the newpaper La Tercera? I am not familiar with it. My years in Chile were mostly spent in Concepcion-Talcahuano, and Diario El Sur was the respected local paper, in spite of being of a conservative bent. I met Eduardo Frei on several occasions socially in Santiago and Concepcion through a good friend, General Carlos Prat,-commander of the Third Zone of Chile, who eventually became a member of Salvador Allende's cabinet as, I thought, a move toward conciliation. Allende's Socialist Party was far left of the Communists and was allied with the Mirista terrorists. Yet, at the marina in Viņa del Mar, Santiago's Riviera on the Pacific Ocean, Allende's boat was the largest of the private flotilla. Strange how those priorities get befuddled. I returned to USA only weeks later to learn that my friend General Prat and his his wife had been blown up and their bodies strewn in the streets of Buenos Aires, where they had, apparently sought sanctuary. To this day I really don't know which side he was on".Ronald Hilton - 8/7/03
