CHILE: Miracleman Pinochet
Carlos Lopez from Chile writes:"David Pike forgot one of the most important achievement of Pinochet: PEACE! During his tenure the country faced an explosive situation with Perú which was defused though diplomatic means, alhough the heaviest concentration of troops in Chilean history was deployed to Antofagasta in 1976. Also his meeting with Hugo Banzer at Charaña in 1975 which defused the situation with Bolivia. Add to this, the solution of the Beagle Channel conflict and you find the man who managed to keep Chile out of war, a situation that few countries in the world enjoy: 120 years without a war! Carmen Negrin has either not been to Chile or Cuba or maybe even neither. The question to future Chileans historians is: was the enormous progress achieved worth the violations of human rights?" RH: Carmen Negrín is married to a Chilean.Ronald Hilton - 8/1/03
