Chile, again
Regarding US interventions in Latin America, Carlos López of Chile says "In 1891,a fight among drunken sailors resulted in two American seamen from the USS Baltimore killed and several wounded. The incident almost brought Chile and the US to war. Most historians agree the US was not prepared for war with Chile".Answering Dwight Peterson's questions about the modern period, Carlos says: "Dwight probably knows that the changes in Chile after 1973 were profound. Some newspapers survived, like El Mercurio, El Sur, la Mañana, la Discusión. But others of long standing disappeared: El Diario Ilustrado, La Union. La Tercera is a fairly new newspaper and it can be read at www.latercera.cl or tercera.cl. It carried (8/3/03) a supplement with untold stories of September 11, 1973.
General Carlos Prats is a mystery to many, more so his death. He was a friend and mentor of Pinochet, and it is inconceivable that Pinochet would have approved of his assassination.. But the DINA boys were running wild in Chile and elsewhere and probably thought they were doing a favor to the government with their murders abroad. Orlando Letelier was another one of their victims".
