Canada
WAIS follows with intense care events all around the globe, including such places as Bhutan. It occurred to me that we say little about Canada, literally America's closest ally. I therefore checked the Stanford Bulletin to see what courses on Canada were taught here. After all, this is a major university, one of whose best-known presidents was a Canadian, J. Wallace Sterling. There was much talk about Stanford's interest in Canada. I perused the Stanford Bulletin and found an amazing variety of courses on the most obscure, odd and wondrous subjects, but nothing on Canada. One etymology of the name is "there's nothing here"-- most appropriate. It looks as though Canada has suffered the same fate as the major Latin American program I founded at Stanford. I am grateful for the liberal education I got perusing the Stanford Bulletin, but I am dismayed by the big hole in it.Ronald Hilton - 7/1/02
