Official Corruption

We have frequently said that the sun, samba and carnival are not the real, grim Brazil where crime of all kinds is prevalent. We have also commended the work of Transparency International, whose Brazilian section is headed by David Fleischer. Since he is a professor at the University of Brasília, he could not be better located to study official crime in Brazil. His work and the whole subject are discussed in "Shark fishing" (The Economist, 11/27).
