The Capital, Canberra

Ron Bracewell, who hails from Sydney, adds this note:
"Siegfried Ramler might have added that Canberra surrounds manmade Lake Burley Griffin, named for the designer of Canberra, an American. In full view between Parliament House and the War Memorial is the American memorial column bearing an American eagle, a token of gratitude for American help against Japanese submarines invading Sydney Harbour; one of them is on display at the War Memorial."

My comment: the Japanese threat was real, not only in Australia but even in Brazil. A Japanese submarine shelled the California Coast. Given the reality of the threat, the removal of the coastal Japanese to relocation camps was judged a prudent measure.
