The Plight of Women in Afghanistan

Despite claims that discrimination against women is contrary to the Koran, the fact is that women are oppressed in all Islamic countries, notable Afghanistan. A French human rights group has distributed a statement calling on the U.N. to intervene. By the marvel of e-mail, it is bouncing around the world. I received it from Sergio Sepiurka, a WAISer in Patagonia, Argentina. It is very long, so only a brief extract is reproduced here:
The government of Afghanistan is waging a war upon women. Since the Taliban took power in 1996, women have had to wear a burqua and have been beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper attire, even if this means simply not having the mesh covering in front of their eyes. One woman was beaten to DEATH by an angry mob of fundamentalists for accidentally exposing her arm while she was driving.
