HDV is traditionally separated into three genotypes and two subtypes.

Genotype 1 is primarily associated with a fulminant form of hepatitis, while genotype II is assoicated with everything from fulminant hepatitis to asymptomatic chronic liver disease. In general, genotype II has less severe outcomes than genotype I.
