The Bunyaviridae are named after Bunyamwera, Uganda, where the first virus of its family was found
Their general characteristics include:
  • Single-stranded RNA genome
  • Negative Sense RNA (except Phlebo, which are ambisense)
  • Tri-segmented genome
  • Enveloped virion
  • Helical capsid
The family Bunyaviridae is divided into 5 genera:
  • Bunyavirus
  • Hantavirus
  • Nairovirus
  • Phlebovirus
  • Tospovirus
