Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule:
United States, January - December 1999

The immunization schedule is recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

  • Hepatitis B:  Three doses are recommended.  The second dose should be one month after the initial; the third dose is administered at least two months after the second
  • DTaP:  Four doses are recommended.  First three doses at 2, 4, and 6 months.  Fourth dose adminisered at 15-18 months.  Tetanous and diptheria toxoids (Td) are recommended every ten years.
  • H. influenzae type b (Hib):  3 doses are recommended by 15 months of age.
  • Poliovirus:  Options include 1) two doses of IPV followed by two doses of OPV or 2) four doses of IPV
  • Rotavirus:  Recently incorporated; three doses at 2, 4, 6 months.
  • MMR:  Two doses are recommended: one in infancy, and another at 4-6 years of age and no later than 11-12 years.
  • Varicella:  Recommended for susceptible children any time after the first birthday.  Children older than 13 should receive two doses.
