Austria Week, which takes place January 29 through February 10,
features a variety of dance lessons and other events to get you in the
mood and ready for the big night. All events are FREE to Viennese
Ball ticket holders. Here is the schedule of 2005 Austria Week
activities:
Please note that there has been a change in the schedule. The Bohemian National Polka
will now be taught at Austrian Tea on February 5, and not at Heuriger Abend.
Lessons in Beginning Salsa, Intermediate Salsa, and Intermediate
Cross-Step Waltz at 8:00. Salsa is currently one of the most popular dance forms on the dance scene.
Come pick up more moves at the lesson, or for free dancing starting at 9:00.
Viennese Ball ticket holders get in free, otherwise it's $7 for the lesson
and dance, or $5 for just the dance. For more information, visit the
Cubberly Pavilion website.
New to dancing or waltzing? For newcomers to dance, or to
dancing with your partner, this is the most important lesson of
Austria Week. Learn to do a turning waltz and cross-step waltz,
or brush up on the basics.
The Congress of Vienna is an elegant choreographed waltz that will
be played at the Ball. Recommended for people that already know a
basic turning waltz, though beginners are welcome to try as well.
Come enjoy an afternoon of Austrian tea, snacks, and waltzing.
The intermediate-level lesson, featuring fun waltz variations, will
begin at 1:00, followed by a one hour practicum. Bohemian National Polka lesson
will begin at 3:00.
Please note that Bohemian National Polka is an intermediate level lesson that
assumes prior experience in basic polka.
So you thought that the Viennese Ball was all about stuffy people
waltzing in circles? Think again! There is a whole ballroom
dedicated to the upbeat energy of swing. This lesson will teach
6-count East Coast swing, for those who have never tried this flavor of
dance or would like a refresher course.
Polka lesson at 8:00 and dancing (DJ'ed music) starting at 9:00.
Enjoy drinks, cheese, and other Austrian delights, then brush up
on your swing, polka, waltz, and anything else you can think of
with dancing until after midnight. Don't miss out on the final night of
food, dance, and fun before the Ball!
