In the year 2000, undergraduates Abe Estess and Rhiannon Meier founded
Urban Styles to provide an opportunity for Stanford students to learn
and perform jazz routines.
Urban Styles Dance Company is the only group on campus dedicated to L.A.-style jazz dancing. In the group's routines, Urban Styles strives to combine personal style and flair with technically advanced jazz skills. Urban Styles offers its members the opportunity to choreograph pieces for the group. Music selection ranges from pop artists to Broadway musicals. Style ranges from Contemporary to Thrash Jazz.
Urban Styles performs at a wide variety of venues throughout the academic year including Stanford's Orientation "O-Show", An Art Affair, Cardinal Ballet's "Urban Nights", Jam Pac'd's "Hip Hop Extravaganza", dv8's "enCounterCulture", Admit Weekend Dance Expo, as well as our own Spring Show (recently titled "Elements") held each May since 2004.
