MEDIA ADVISORY For Immediate Release: October 3, 2000 Contact: Nate Klemp klempn@stanford.edu Stanford Land Use Plan Restricts Access to Foothills: Students Organize Hike Protesting the Hypocritical ÒConservationÓ Plan What: ÒFree the FoothillsÓ--a hike to the Stanford Dish challenging the 7 oÕclock curfew for the area, and protesting the Conservation and Use Plan for the Stanford Dish Area announced by the University in May and implemented over the summer. Who: The protest is co-sponsored by The Foothill Liberation Front and Think!, a student disorganization. Think! (think.stanford.edu) has sponsored many creative events on campus lampooning ÒStanford.com,Ó including disrupting last yearÕs MSNBC Summit in Silicon Valley with a banner that read ÒYouÕve Got Monopoly.Ó Where: Starting at the Tressider Union bollards, continuing to the Stanford Dish and back. When: Students and community members will gather at 11:00 pm on Wednesday, October 4 and begin hiking to the Dish at 11:30. Why: Students and community members want to know: _ Why has night use of the Foothills been banned? _ Why has the main road been paved, if the goal of the plan is conservation? _ Why are cattle still allowed to graze behind the Dish while dogs are prohibited? _ If the planÕs intent was to remedy abuses that have Òimpaired the visual beauty of the areaÓ why have ugly signs been placed every few feet of the area? These are all questions the University needs to answer in an honest dialogue with students and community members. Media Visuals: Protesters signing a petition to change the current draconian plan and climbing over the gate that locks out joggers and hikers at night; comically excessive trespassing signs that circle the Foothills; pickup trucks patrolling a conservation area; bewildered community police. ###
