They're everywhere. Parties, Cultural Events, Orientation, Concerts... you've been seeing poets and you didn't even know it. The Stanford Spoken Word Collective performs at events across campus to support initiatives, entertain, and express the spirit of the gathering. Winning one for Stanford!
Poetry Slam: The Collective will be hosting one chapter of one of the biggest slams in the bay area. Get ready to experience slam poetry at its finest on Thursday, January 31st 2008 when members from the top slam teams in the nation--UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and your very own Stanford University--come together to battle it down. The Collective puts together a slam team each year that competes at the Collegiate Nationals Competition. In the past, our team has made it to the semifinals on more than one occasion and picked up individual awards including: Best Paper Poem, Funniest Poet, Best Delivery, and All-Around Poet. The Stanford Slam team has consistently made it to the top rounds of the slam, and this year will be no exception. 2008 Nationals will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Stanford Spoken Word Collective heads poetry workshops every year for elementary, high school, and college students in the Bay Area
By teaching spoken word poems as articulated thought, the group utilizes the excitement of spoken word and slam poetry to teach the literary elements of metaphor, diction, rhyme, word order, alliteration, and more. The group specializes in collaborative writing techniques to get kids over writer's block with team-based approaches to writing.
