Rush FAQs

Spring Rush 2008

Who is SYZ?
Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, also known as SYZ, is an Asian-interest sorority at Stanford. Our national philanthropy is combating violence against women. The Omicron Charter at Stanford University was founded in January 2004.

How do I join SYZ?
As with any Greek organization, there is a two-part process to join: rush and pledging.

What is rush?
Rush is a time for girls interested in joining SYZ to meet the active sisters and learn more about the sorority. This is your chance to ask any questions you have about SYZ, pledging, or sorority life in general. Rush is completely nonbinding -- in other words, there is absolutely no pressure to commit to or join SYZ when you rush.

How do I Rush SYZ?
Spring Rush begins the first week of Spring Quarter. Rush is open to any female student who is not currently an active member of another Greek organization (this does not include AKPsi or APhiO). After Rush, we interview girls interested in joining SYZ. To get an interview, rushees must attend one General Information Meeting (GIM) and two rush events.

Why should I rush SYZ?
It’s fun and completely nonbinding! We are excited to meet you and we have a lot of fun activities planned. A little intimidated? You are always welcome to bring a friend!

What is pledging?
After you have completed the rush requirements and have been interviewed, bids will be offered inviting rushees to pledge SYZ. If you receive and accept a bid, the pledging process begins. During this time, pledges participate in activities that build leadership and sisterhood with their fellow pledge sisters and the active sisters. SYZ strictly follows the University and our own National rules against hazing and the mistreatment of pledges. In SYZ, we DO NOT haze our pledges.

I am not Asian. Can I still join?
Absolutely! Although we are an Asian-interest sorority, we welcome women of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities. In fact, nationally, 10 percent of the sisters are of non-Asian decent.

How is SYZ different from other sororities?
The main difference between SYZ and any sorority, Asian-interest or non-Asian, is the women in the organization. When choosing a sorority to rush or pledge, the most important factor should be how comfortable you feel and how well you get along with the sisters. Ask yourself, do you feel relaxed while chatting with them? Can you see yourself hanging out with them in the future? If the answer is “Yes,” you should definitely consider joining! After all, sisterhood lasts beyond pledging—and even beyond college. It lasts a lifetime.
