Hello Businesswomen!
We hope you are all well-rested after the long weekend! We have several exciting events in the works. This week we have our "Mentor Mocha" at the WCC (see the flyer and announcement in the upcoming events). This is a great time to meet up with women from the Business School and ask them all your questions. Coffeecake and warm beverages are always a plus :)
We are finalizing all the information for the "I don't know" to CEO Conference coming up this spring - look out for the website registration and circulation flyers coming very soon!
A few events currently in the works: Business Bites with LimeLife, a mobile-media company focusing on Women; Business Bites with a female entrepreneur, CEO or ElephantPharm; and a Business Bites focusing on fashion and business featuring Stanford Alumni from the Gap.
We'll keep you posted! Hope to see you at the Mochas this week,
Dana & Heidi

Past Events Recap
CEO Mara Brazer spoke words of encouragement to SWIB
members last Wednesday, February 7th at our Business Bites: Marketing Magic event. Mara detailed the exciting
course of events that eventually led her to found Marketing
and Public Relations company Brazer Communications in San Francisco. Mara’s
experiences in positions as diverse as journalist, PR specialist, impresario, intrapreneur, and executive have allowed her to work across many sectors (non-profit,
public, and corporate) and in many settings (Washington D.C., New Haven,
and San Francisco). Mara shared examples of her work with SWIB members, explained useful marketing buzz words like "messaging," "brand
extensions," and "publicity," and provided some tips on how
to get a marketing job and on what makes a good advertisement. Business
Bites attendees also benefited from very practical, generalizable business
advice. We’ve included these tips for you!
Mara’s 4 Pieces of Business Advice:
1. Adopt the “No Problem!” Mentality. Mara cringes when she hears women on the
job say “I’ll try” while men say “No problem!” to the very same assignment.
Approach your tasks with confidence and enthusiasm. Failure shouldn’t cross
your mind, and even if it does, don’t let your colleagues know that you
doubt your ability to get the job done.
2. It’s okay to ‘zig-zag’ along your career path! Mara worked across many
industries and sectors and was able to turn those diverse experiences into
a career in Marketing.
3. Call after-hours. When Mara was trying
to build her network in Washington D.C., her strategy for getting through to her targets was
to call after hours – when the secretaries are no longer manning the lines
and your contact is likely to answer!
4. Make connections and use your network. It’s that simple.
